How Structural Insulated Panel Systems (SIPS) Work

Unlike traditional construction, with a SIPS system the majority of work is carried out in the manufacturing facility. All window and door openings are pre-cut in the factory. As the panels are structurally integral they do not require any additional work on site; simply to be lifted and secured in place. With less work to do on site, the number of people and the time taken to make a structure wind and water tight is reduced to a number of days, depending on size and complexity.

  • Stage 1 : A base is formed; either concrete or pile driven, to include drains, water etc..
  • Stage 2 : A Damp Proof Membrane is laid and a timber soleplate is secured to the base
  • Stage 3 : SIPS wall panels are fixed in place, one at a time, to create the ground floor
  • Stage 4 : The base for the first floor is created; either ibeams, concrete or steel
  • Stage 5 : SIPS wall panels are fixed in place, one at a time, to create the second floor
  • Stage 6 : SIPS for the second upper floor gable are lifted and secured
  • Stage 7 : Purling or ridge beams are slotted into place providing a structural strength for the roof span
  • Stage 8 : SIPS roof panels are lifted and secured into place
  • Stage 9 : The completed shell is covered with a breather membrane

Environmental Advantages of SIPS

  • SIPS are acknowledged in the UK as a green building method
  • Timber used to make OSB is grown from trees in sustainable managed forests; it uses less energy than other building materials and it is a better insulator
  • EPS which forms the inner core and the insulation for the system is both CFC and HCFC free; has an ozone depletion of zero abd is constructed of 98% air
  • Panels provide high thermal performance; the joints between SIPS panels are tight and offer a draught free house with minimal cold bridging; keeping properties warm in the summer
  • Recycling : The OSB board and EPS core are both recyclable materials
